If your iPhone rings several times a day with numbers you don't recognize, there's a built-in fix. Your iPhone can automatically silence calls from numbers that aren't in your contacts and send them straight to voicemail. Real callers can still leave a message, and robocalls and spam just quietly disappear.

Here's how to turn it on and how to avoid missing calls you care about.

How to turn on Silence Unknown Callers

On current versions of iOS (iOS 26), the option lives under Screen Unknown Callers:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Phone.
  3. Scroll to Screen Unknown Callers.
  4. Choose Silence.

Calls from numbers that aren't saved in your contacts won't ring anymore. They go to voicemail and still show up in your call list.

Silence vs. Ask Reason for Calling

In iOS 26, you get three choices under Screen Unknown Callers:

  • Never: Unknown numbers ring like any other call.
  • Ask Reason for Calling: Your iPhone answers for you and asks the caller for their name and why they're calling. Then it rings and shows you their answer so you can decide whether to pick up.
  • Silence: Unknown numbers never ring. They go straight to voicemail.

Who still rings through?

Anyone saved in your Contacts rings normally, so the key is having important numbers saved. Before you switch this on, add numbers like:

  • Your kids' school and daycare
  • Doctors, dentists, and your pharmacy
  • Your workplace and anyone you're expecting a call from

Make sure your contacts are syncing

Silence Unknown Callers only knows about the contacts on your iPhone. If you store contacts in iCloud, Gmail, or a work account, make sure that account's contacts are turned on:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts.
  2. Tap each account and make sure Contacts is turned on.

If a number is only saved on another device or in an account that isn't syncing, your iPhone will treat it as unknown.

Filter unknown and spam calls from your call list

Silencing stops the ringing, but you can also keep your call list tidy. In Settings > Apps > Phone, scroll to Call Filtering:

  • Unknown Callers: Moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into a separate Unknown Callers list.
  • Spam: Calls your carrier identifies as likely spam are silenced, sent to voicemail, and moved to a Spam list.

To see those lists, open the Phone app, go to Recents (or Calls), and tap the Filter button.

Block and report repeat offenders

If the same number keeps bothering you:

  1. Open the Phone app and go to Recents (or Calls).
  2. Tap the info button next to the number.
  3. Tap Block Caller.

Many carriers also have free spam-blocking apps or settings. You can add call-blocking apps under Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.

Want quiet time from everyone?

Silence Unknown Callers only affects unknown numbers. To silence everyone except a few people, use a Focus such as Do Not Disturb in Settings > Focus. You can choose who can still call you. Allow Repeated Calls lets a second call from the same person within three minutes ring through, which is useful for emergencies.

Bonus: answer calls hands-free

If you take a lot of calls while driving or doing chores, a comfortable Bluetooth headset makes them easier.

Turn on Silence today, save your important numbers, and enjoy a much quieter phone.
